Professor Kostalas relocated with his family to Port Macquarie in 2013. His education includes an undergraduate medical degree, a master's degree in medicine (clinical epidemiology), a master's degree in science from the University of Oxford (in evidence-based health care and medical statistics), a master's degree in biostatistics (University of Queensland), and a fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. He is finalising a DPhil at the University of Oxford on serrated lesions and serrated polyposis syndrome.
Stuart undertook his training across a variety of hospitals in NSW. Importantly, he has continued to train at leading centres around the world (Japan, France, USA, Austria, and the Netherlands). He regularly travels overseas to train with international experts, refine his endoscopic and clinical knowledge, and ensure his skills and knowledge remain current and relevant. He conducts the full spectrum of endoscopic procedures at Port Macquarie Private Hospital, where he is the Director of Endoscopy.
Prof Kostalas adheres to current evidence-based practice in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. As part of his commitment to ongoing learning and best practice, he is a member of many international GI societies. He is a member of the Australian and New Zealand Endoscopy Leaders Forum and of GESA's Regional, Remote and Indigenous group. He established and runs PMEC (the Port Macquarie ESD Course). Stuart is a Conjoint Professor of Medicine at the University of New South Wales. He chairs the Medical Advisory Committee at Port Macquarie Private Hospital and served as a working group member on the NSW scope of clinical practice in Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
