A/Prof Hugh McGregor

Associate Professor Hugh McGregor is a specialist general surgeon with extensive experience in hernia surgery and abdominal wall reconstruction. He is an Associate Professor of Surgery at The University of Queensland and currently serves as President of the Australia & New Zealand Hernia Society (ANZ Hernia).

His practice focuses on the assessment and management of simple, complex, recurrent and chronic pain-related hernia conditions. He has particular experience in minimally invasive techniques, including laparoscopic and robotic surgery, as well as advanced abdominal wall surgery. He has a particular interest in the management of chronic groin pain and persistent pain following hernia repair. Associate Professor McGregor also has extensive experience in proctology, having performed more than 6,000 procedures for conditions including haemorrhoids, fistulas and fissures. He has broad experience across general surgery and regularly performs endoscopy and colonoscopy. Associate Professor McGregor offers a rapid access endoscopy service for selected patients requiring colonoscopy or gastroscopy. This service provides an alternative pathway for patients who may require earlier assessment, subject to clinical suitability and service availability.

He has experience using both the da Vinci and Hugo RAS robotic surgical platforms, including their application in complex hernia surgery and procedures for chronic pain. Associate Professor McGregor completed his medical degree with honours at The University of Queensland and holds a PhD from Monash University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS). His professional and academic interests include surgical outcomes, chronic groin pain and optimisation of hernia repair techniques. 

As President of the Australia & New Zealand Hernia Society, he contributes to professional education, research and the development of knowledge in hernia surgery across Australia and New Zealand. He is actively involved in teaching, mentoring, conference faculty and invited presentations, and participates in national and international collaborative research programs.
