Dr Shamitha Goonewardene

Dr Shamitha Goonewardene is a General Respiratory Physician and Interventional Pulmonologist with expertise in the diagnosis and management of lung nodules, lung cancer, pleural disease, interstitial lung disease and complex airway disorders. He welcomes referrals across all areas of respiratory medicine, including asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, chronic cough, interstitial lung disease, pleural disease and suspected lung cancer.

He graduated from Monash University and completed Respiratory Medicine training at Sunshine Coast University Hospital and the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, before undertaking a Fellowship in Interventional Pulmonology at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.

Dr Goonewardene has advanced training in diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy, including navigational bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), transbronchial cryobiopsy, pleural procedures and the management of central airway obstruction. He is actively involved in multidisciplinary thoracic care and is committed to delivering compassionate, patient-centred and evidence-based care.

Dr Goonewardene is also a prospective PhD candidate at The University of Queensland, with research interests in pulmonary nodule diagnosis, advanced bronchoscopy and emerging bronchoscopic imaging technologies. He has presented research at national scientific meetings including TSANZ and TOGA, and remains actively involved in clinical research, medical education and quality improvement.
